How To Decide Where To Move: Using Surveying To Decide Where To Live

“All mankind is divided into three classes: those that are immovable, those that are movable, and those that move.”

-Benjamin Franklin
According to the US Census Bureau, the average person can expect to move homes 11.7 times in their lifetime.
Relocation related survey as per people desire

The odds are high that you yourself have moved homes at least once, if not more - and so you’re aware of the many hassles, trials, and tribulations that stem from making a big move to a new city. Packing, travel, financial concerns, real estate paperwork; from folding cardboard boxes to unpacking your last stash of clothes, the moving process often takes weeks if not months to finally settle.

With so much on the line it’s vital that you’re choosing to move somewhere that satisfies your many needs, wants, and personal desires. After all the weeks of hard work and headache spent relocating the last thing you want to feel is regret. Keep in mind this distressing statistic - almost half of all people that move end up reporting feeling some amount of regret or remorse about their decision to relocate. These regrets often pertain to things such as lack of new job satisfaction, remorse over no longer being in close proximity to family and friends, and disdain for the new home they've chosen.

There are many important factors to consider to when choosing a new place to live- and you don’t have to make these decisions alone.
Whether you're looking to live in the big city, or a quiet small town, Helpfull has you covered.

Utilizing Helpfull surveys can help you to: answer questions related to your prospective city, guide your decision-making, and to make sure you're properly informed when deciding where to live.

Get Community Feedback On Where You Want To Live

Whether you’re moving to the next city over - or you're moving to a new city in a country halfway across the world - getting outside feedback when choosing a place to live is the best way to make an informed moving decision.

To showcase how Helpfull surveys can influence your decision-making, we asked one hundred Helpfull pollsters to answer the question, “Where should I move my family to?”

We devised a Helpfull image-comparison survey asking the community to consider the three final choices we narrowed down for our move. In showcasing the three similarly-sized big-cities we selected, we asked the audience to consider the following:

“I am looking to move my family out of our current home and move somewhere new. We're looking for a major city, somewhere with lots to do and see that; it's important that it's a good city for raising a family in. Which of our choices do you think is the best fit for us?”
Community Feedback on multiple similarly-sized big-cities

In just one hour, we received one-hundred new insights on deciding where to live. Of the three big-cities we listed, the Helpfull community voted Dallas as the best city to consider when choosing where to live. While the voting decisions give us a better idea of general sentiment towards each city, the feedback given by the pollster community is what we’re really looking to consider.

pollster community comments on Where To Live

Scrolling through the comments given to us by Helpfull pollsters, we’re left with a lot to consider. Community members shared their experiences and opinions on every relevant facet: crime rates, housing costs, weather, natural geography, public transportation, availability of things to do, the architecture, and even the communities found in their respective locales. Not only does the advice serve to satiate some of our concerns about moving our family - they’ve given us a travel itinerary for when we make our move!

But what if your move isn’t local - can Helpfull be used for trans-continental moves?
With the versatile nature of Helpfull’s surveying capabilities, anything is possible.

A Helpfull Community for Any Occasion

Helpfull Community feedback as per any Occasion
“After the pandemic is over, I'm planning on moving my family out from America to Europe. My family and I have narrowed down our options to three countries - which one would be the best to move my family to? We're looking for things like ease of immigration, quality of life, and cost of living. Thank you!”

For our next survey, we set our sights overseas. Moving across the world can be exciting, intimidating, freeing, frustrating - all at once. We wanted to see if Helpfull pollsters could give us advice on which of these European countries - Germany, France, and Belgium - would be the best place for my family to make their home in; as predicted, the community turned out in a very big way.

pollsters respondes on cross-country emigration

In just twenty-five minutes, one-hundred pollsters responded to our survey about cross-country emigration. The votes were divided - the community had many good things to say about their respective choices. The pollsters weighed and considered the different qualities we were looking for in a country - ease of immigration, cost of living, and the general quality of life. They added their own anecdotal experiences and research on top of what we asked, going above and beyond in order to ensure we were fully informed before we chose to make our move.

Tailor Your Audience to Your Specific Concerns

Helpfull’s intuitive poll creation software allows for surveys to be sent out to an audience tailored to your specific needs.
The numerous available demographic segments - based on qualities like sex, age, and political affiliation - allow Helpfull users to select an audience that is going to give them the most pertinent, relevant feedback on their moving concerns.

For our final survey, we wanted to seek advice on moving - not for ourselves, but for our grandparents:

Audience selection for specific demographic
“My grandparents are looking to retire soon, and would like to find a retirement-friendly community to move into. After doing some research with them, I found three cities they liked that all rate highly for retirees. Which city should they move to?”

In order to get only the most relevant advice on the matter of “best cities to retire in”, we want to hear from only pollsters who are in or near retirement age. Just before submitting the survey, we manipulate the target demographic audience to only include pollsters ages 46 and up.

Helpfull pollsters for decision making feedback

Within an hour’s time, our community of Helpfull pollsters came to a unanimous decision. Of the cities we tested, pollsters overwhelmingly settled on Jacksonville, FL as the ultimate retirement destination. We’re very unlikely to convince our grandparents to consider our advice just based on the results of an internet poll, so we comb through the comment section to learn more about what the community has to say on the merits of Jacksonville.

Helpful panelist advice

Warm weather, plentiful beaches, clear skies, a reasonable cost of living, and an established community of friendly retirees were just a few of the reasons Helpfull pollsters urged us towards Jacksonville. Now when we go to convince Gram-Gram and Pee-Paw to move out east, we’ll have a pool of considerations from their peers to draw from. That’s some helpful advice!

Put Your Indecision To Bed With Feedback

Making the decision to move comes bundled with a myriad of questions to consider: from cost of living ,the weather and the quality of the public schools and education system - to quality of life and availability of good public transportation. With so much to think about - and so much being placed on the line - it’s vital that you approach these decisions with a calm, measured approach. Getting outside feedback on your moving concerns is the best way to avoid the dreaded mover’s remorse - and with Helpfull, getting the advice you need is just a short survey away.
